I used to sketch on plain paper, but switching to a dotted grid notebook changed everything for my pattern drafts.

For my last three projects, I drew everything on standard printer paper and my proportions were always off by about an inch. Last week, I bought a dotted grid notebook for five dollars. The pre-printed dots let me keep my lines straight and scale consistent without needing a ruler for every single line. I just finished a skirt pattern and the pieces fit together perfectly on the first muslin test. Has anyone else found a simple tool that fixed a basic drafting problem for them?

Yeah, that "scale consistent" thing is key. I switched to a clear plastic ruler with a grid printed on it, lets me see the fabric underneath.

Clear rulers are a total game changer. I used to mess up my embroidery patterns all the time trying to line up a regular metal ruler. The grid on the plastic one lets you match the fabric grain perfectly, and you can see exactly where to start your stitch. It just takes all the guesswork out.

Is a five dollar notebook really that big of a deal? It's just dots on paper.
