PSA: My sister said my designs looked 'like a costume' and it stung

We were at a cafe in Austin last weekend and she pointed at my sketch of a layered, ruffled dress. She said, 'It's cool, but who wears that in real life?' I've been thinking about it for days now. I realized I might be designing for the runway in my head instead of for actual people. Has anyone else had a moment that made you check if your ideas are wearable?

Okay but what if your sister had a tiny point? "Forget what she said" is easy to say, but she's the one who saw it in a real cafe, not on a runway. If a design looks like a costume to a normal person, maybe it needs a tweak to feel more like clothes. Like, could you take that layered ruffled dress idea and make it with a simple cotton instead of tulle, or lose one of the sleeves? The best fashion finds a cool middle ground between art and something you can actually live in.

Forget what she said. Some people just don't get art. Keep designing for your runway.
