Watch out for design thieves in your social circle!
I casually showed my new dress design to a neighbor, and next thing I know, she's selling something very similar online. Protect your ideas before you share!

Take @iris175's point about watermarks. Does that help when your neighbor has already seen the dress in person? Once they've seen the idea, it's pretty much out there. How do you even prove they copied you if nothing's on paper? Maybe the only safe move is to only show designs to people you'd take to court.

Happened to me with a kitchen layout I sketched for a client. They took my drawing to another contractor to build it cheaper. Now I only show finished work or use watermarks.

My aunt's quilt pattern got copied at a craft fair. @jordan_young isn't wrong, and now I trust no one with a sewing machine.
