My grandma called my sourdough starter a 'science project gone wrong'
Honestly, she was visiting and saw my jar on the counter, all bubbly. She leaned in, sniffed it, and said, 'That looks like something you'd find under the fridge, not in it.' Tbh, it made me laugh but also think. I realized to a lot of people, fermentation just looks like weird, forgotten food. Has anyone else had a family member totally grossed out by your ferments?

Tell her she's not wrong. Ngl, my kombucha scoby looks like a weird alien pancake my dog coughed up. My mom still asks if I'm sure it's not just old tea I forgot about for a month.

My scoby looks like something my cat dragged in, so I feel you on the alien pancake thing.

Okay but the real question is where do you keep yours? My first scoby lived in a cabinet and honestly it did look like a science experiment gone wrong. Now it's on the counter and my roommate still side-eyes the jar every morning. Does having it out in the open make it look more legit or even weirder?
