Vent: My sauerkraut jar fizzed over at a potluck

I brought my first batch of sauerkraut to a friend's potluck last weekend. When I opened it, foam and liquid shot out all over the table, which was pretty embarrassing. How do you guys safely transport fermented veggies without surprises?

Isn't the fizzy mess proof your ferment is alive and doing its thing?

Totally agree with @kelly_schmidt. That fizz means your microbes are throwing a party. Just remember to burp your jars so they don't blow.
