Serious question, why does everyone push for fast first drafts when mine took years to feel right?

My best work came from letting the draft simmer for ages, not from rushing to meet some arbitrary deadline.

My friend's published novel started as a 'years to feel right' draft.

That "years to feel right" draft idea really hits home. I see this ALL the time with creative stuff, not just writing. It's like your brain needs to marinate on an idea before it clicks. Even in daily life, the best decisions often come after walking away for a bit. We live in a rush, but quality things NEED that slow cook time. It's why forcing creativity usually leads to bad work.

Look at online web serials that update weekly, they build huge audiences without years of drafts. Forcing a finish date can actually make ideas sharper, not worse. Many pros say the first draft is just to get it out, and editing fixes it later. That "years to feel right" draft might just be procrastination in disguise. You can OVER-think a project into the ground. Sometimes, you need to push through and ship it, even if it's not perfect.
