Debate in my coworking space: are freelance platforms a step up or a step down?

Some freelancers find platforms easy for client hunting, but others think they lower the value of our work, so where do you stand?

It breaks my heart to hear how that burned out such a good talent.

Ugh, saw it happen to a friend too. She got stuck rewriting terrible articles for pennies and lost all her professional contacts.

That part about lowering the value of work is real. My friend Jake, a great graphic designer, got stuck on a platform for two years. He was doing full branding projects for like $300 because the clients there expected cheap work. It totally burned him out and made it harder for him to charge real rates later when he tried to go out on his own. He said the race to the bottom on those sites broke his confidence for a while.
