A sibling's 'quick fix' on my varnish led to a cloudy finish
My brother thought he could speed up the drying by using a hair dryer on my freshly varnished table. The heat caused the varnish to bubble and now it's all cloudy and uneven, which means I have to strip it back and start over (a total pain, honestly). Has anyone else had family 'help' go horribly wrong, and how do you politely set boundaries for your projects?

Lock your tools up next time. Seriously, make your brother help strip and redo the whole table. He needs to feel the pain of his quick fix to learn why it was stupid. Most people don't get that messing with drying times ruins everything. You set boundaries by showing, not just telling.

My neighbor's kid once ruined a door by not letting stain dry fully. @betty_price14 is correct about making him redo the table, but an angle often missed is the pre-work talk. Before you even start stripping, sit down and show him the product labels and drying times. Point out how skipping steps leads to fails that cost more time and money later. When he sees the science behind it, the redo becomes a lesson in care, not just a chore. That way, he learns to respect the process and your tools without you having to lock them up.

Ugh, that's brutal! I heard about a guy whose wife wiped his stained deck before it cured, leaving ugly streaks everywhere. @hollyg59 is onto something with that pre-work talk, because seeing the instructions makes people pause. My own uncle messed up a paint job by using a fan in a dusty room, and it trapped all sorts of grit. Honestly, sometimes you gotta just hand them the sandpaper and say "your turn" so they feel the consequence.
