Ditching my orbital sander for hand work changed everything

Quitting power sanding cold turkey wiped out all the swirl marks and gave me perfect control over the final surface.

That reminds me of my old shop teacher talking about sharpening plane irons. He'd go on and on about the sound a truly sharp blade makes on wood (a quiet whisper, not a scrape). Said you could only get that feel by hand on a stone, never with a jig. Makes sense, like your grandad's thing about sanding. You connect with the material in a different way.
