Vent: My first furniture project was a beat-up oak desk.

Sanding it for days showed me how wood speaks, something modern finishes hide.

That bit about wood speaking really gets it. I had the same feeling fixing up an old chair last year, where the sanding dust felt like years of stories coming off. You're right that most new stuff just has a plastic coat over all that life. It's a special kind of tired to finish something like that, but in a good way. Your hands just know the wood better after.

I heard once that wood keeps a record of its life as a tree. The growth rings tell stories about good seasons and bad, so working with it feels personal. It's no wonder old pieces have so much soul compared to flat-pack furniture.

Wait, that's a cool way to put it. Do you ever actually feel that history in your hands when you're working on a piece, like the tree's story coming through?
