Warning: My makeshift resistance band system failed during a workout. Any advice for a safer alternative?

Ugh, my buddy tried to cool his gaming rig with a box fan and a maze of dryer vent tubing. The WHOLE idea was a mess, but the ACTUAL wire he used to prop the fan open slipped. It fell right into the blades, which shot a piece of plastic into the case. Fried a motherboard port. Total domino effect of bad choices.
