Kelp forests near my coast aren't just scenic, they're vital climate buffers I underestimated

Honestly, I always viewed the kelp beds as pretty backdrops for kayaking, not crucial ecosystems. Tbh, seeing them thin out over five years while our shoreline erosion worsened changed my perspective completely. A researcher's talk linked healthy kelp to absorbing wave energy and storing carbon, which clicked when I noticed our protected cove with dense kelp had way less damage after storms. Now I get that preserving these forests is about coastal defense, not just marine beauty.

Calling kelp forests vital climate buffers seems like a stretch. Their carbon sequestration rates are pretty low compared to other ecosystems, and wave absorption might be overstated. I've read that sediment shifts and offshore barriers play bigger roles in erosion control. How do you separate the kelp effect from natural coastal processes?

Vital buffers? Doubt it's that serious.

Actually, how do researchers isolate the kelp effect from other coastal processes? Have they done comparative studies on erosion rates with and without kelp beds?
