Grocery stores consistently out of fresh basil when I'm mid-meal prep

I was all set to make a week's worth of pesto pasta salads, but of course, no basil in sight at my usual spot. I mean, it feels personal at this point, like the universe is mocking my organized Sunday plans. What do you do when a recipe hinges on one fresh herb that's just not available?

Grow your own basil indoors. It's cheaper and ensures you never run out. You'll thank yourself next time pesto calls.

My kitchen window gets about four hours of sun daily, but basil supposedly needs six to eight. I tried growing it last season and the plants got all spindly and sad. Pesto is delicious, but is it worth the constant monitoring and potential mold issues? A bunch of fresh basil costs like two bucks at the store. Sometimes convenience beats the homemade hype, you know?

You've hit on something deeper here with the basil struggle. We're constantly sold this idea that homemade is inherently superior, but it ignores the real costs of time and mental energy. This isn't just about herbs; it's a symptom of a culture that prizes performative self-sufficiency over practical convenience. The pressure to DIY everything from food to furniture creates unnecessary guilt when we opt for simpler solutions. Sometimes, accepting that two dollars for basil is a fair trade for your peace of mind is a radical act of self-care.
