Thought movie critics were just snobs... then I read one that explained why I loved a film without realizing it...

Ever notice how the good critics point out stuff you felt but couldn't name? Like when someone shows you the quiet tension in a scene just from how two people are standing apart. That actually helps you see better. But then you get the other kind, like that guy going on about Tom Cruise's elbows when he runs. That's not about the movie anymore, it's just the critic proving they're the smartest person in the room. One makes you love the art more, the other just makes you tired of the artist.

Read Anthony Lane's review of Mission Impossible once. Dude spent 500 words just talking about Tom Cruise's running form. Sometimes they're just describing their own weird obsessions.

Lol yeah the "weird obsessions" thing is so true. I see it all the time where people get fixated on one tiny detail instead of the whole picture. My take is you gotta figure out if the reviewer actually cares about the thing they're covering, or just hear themselves talk. When they go that deep on something random like running form, they're probably just showing off. Honestly at that point you learn more about the critic than the movie.
