Serious question, is the 'inbox zero' mentality actually destroying your focus?

I kept seeing posts about how clearing your email inbox to zero daily is the ultimate productivity flex, so I dedicated hours each morning to achieving it. But omg, I realized I was spending so much time sorting and archiving emails that I was pushing back my actual deep work sessions. My to-do list was growing while my inbox shrank, and I felt productive in the worst way. It got to the point where I'd avoid starting important projects just to keep that inbox clean, which is backwards af. Now I'm wondering if this hack is just busywork in disguise for people like me who get sidetracked by small wins. Has anyone else found that chasing inbox zero made them less effective on big picture stuff? I'm switching to checking emails only twice a day and letting some clutter live, and honestly, my output has improved. Maybe we need to question if some popular hacks are just productivity theater.

Wow, inbox zero feels like a shiny trophy for avoiding the hard stuff, doesn't it? You're right that archiving emails can become a pointless ritual that delays real progress. What's the real cost when we prioritize a clean inbox over meaningful work?

Last month I spent twelve hours chasing that empty inbox feeling. It really is like polishing a trophy while your actual work gathers dust. The clean screen just hides the piles left untouched.
