My cassette deck finally sounds clean after 2 weeks of fiddling

Got my old Pioneer deck back from my buddy's garage and it was hissing like crazy, plus the left channel kept dropping out. I spent about 2 weeks cleaning the heads with isopropyl and swapping out the cheap RCA cables for some thicker ones I had lying around. Last night I put on a 1991 mix I made in high school and it came through crystal clear, no hiss, no dropouts. Has anyone else had luck fixing a channel issue with just a good head demagnetizer or was mine just a cable problem?
