I charge my phone in another room and people treat it like a personal offense

About a year ago I started leaving my phone to charge in the living room overnight instead of on my nightstand. I sleep much better now, but I've had multiple arguments with friends who say it's reckless not to have it within arm's reach. Is an expectation of constant availability really more important than decent sleep?

A year without my phone by the bed changed my life.

Seriously, how is this even a debate? People act like being unavailable for a few hours overnight is a life-threatening risk. We managed just fine before smartphones were glued to our hands. If charging your phone in another room helps you sleep, that's a net positive. Your friends need to chill out about this.

Honestly, my buddy Mark tried this last year and his sister blew up his landline at 2 AM thinking he was dead. Turns out she just wanted to gossip about her date, but he was sleeping like a baby in the other room. He said the quality of his deep sleep improved so much that he started remembering his dreams again. His family eventually adjusted to the idea that he's off-grid from 10 PM to 6 AM. In my experience, that trade-off for mental rest is worth the occasional missed non-emergency.

But emergencies don't care about your deep sleep.
