Bought a $200 'pro' flashlight for mall exploring, total waste

I got this heavy duty tactical light online thinking it would be perfect for dark mall basements. It was way too bright, washed out all the detail in my photos, and the battery died after like 90 minutes. Ended up just using my phone light the whole time anyway. Anyone have a good light that's bright enough to see but not so harsh?

Yeah I read somewhere that super bright lights actually ruin photos for urban exploring, @phoenix_carter might be onto something with the battery life being the real feature.
