Got chased by a guard dog at the old Sunrise Mall in Corpus Christi last year. Now I always bring a can of pepper spray, but some friends say that's overkill. What's your safety rule?

Respectfully disagree with the pepper spray being a must. Had a stray dog chase me near the old train tracks in Houston once. Just stood still and yelled "NO" really loud. Dog turned and ran. Body language and voice work better than spray in my experience. Plus you don't have to worry about missing or spraying yourself in the wind.

Oh man, that is NOT overkill! I had a super similar thing happen near some abandoned warehouses where I was checking out a graffiti spot. A huge dog came out of nowhere and just charged, no owner in sight. Carrying pepper spray is just smart, it's like a seatbelt. You hope you never need it, but you'll be glad it's there. My rule now is to always have it in my pocket if I'm anywhere that feels even a little sketchy.
