Hit my 50th abandoned mall last weekend and it felt weird
I was counting on my phone notes and realized the old Meridian Mall in Ohio was my 50th explore. That number just snuck up on me, never thought I'd see that many empty food courts and dead escalators. The Meridian one had this faded arcade sign still hanging, brought back memories of playing there as a kid. Anyone else keep a tally of their mall visits and get surprised by the total?

35 is my number and I still remember the exact day I passed it without realizing. The old River Valley Mall in Kentucky was the one that did it for me, that place had a carousel that was still standing but the horses were all chained up. It hit me weird too, like I was just wandering through someone's abandoned memories or something. The faded signs always get me the most, especially the old arcade or theater ones that are still hanging there decades later. Never thought I'd keep counting past 20 but here we are, right?

Oh man, I gotta respectfully push back on this one @gibson.elizabeth. For me those frozen-in-time places feel more hopeful than sad, like the mall just went to sleep instead of dying. Idk, maybe it's just me but seeing those chained up horses makes me think they might wake up and start moving again someday.

Old mall carousels always feel like they're holding their breath. @the_margaret, you might be onto something about them just sleeping though I've never found a dead mall that looked like it was about to wake up.
