I realized my obsession with getting the perfect photo was ruining the experience for my friend at the old Northgate Mall.

After my buddy Dave said, 'I'm just a prop in your Instagram story, aren't I?' while I made him hold a light for the tenth shot of a broken fountain, I finally saw I was treating the place like a set, not a story.

Switched to a cheap film camera last year. It only has 24 shots per roll, so you really have to pick your moment. Forces me to put it down and just talk to people.

It's a real thing now, where the memory is for the camera and not for you. My cousin missed our whole hike because she was trying to get a slow-motion video of her hair blowing. We end up watching life through a screen instead of just being in it. That comment from your friend would have stopped me cold too.

Wait, she missed the whole hike for that? I mean, that's just sad. Makes you wonder what the point of going even was.
