Kid working security at the old mall changed how I see things
Was at the Regency Mall up in Albany last weekend, talking to this 22 year old guard who works the night shift there. He said 'people get real quiet when they walk through a food court with no sound, like they're waiting for someone to call their order.' That hit me because I've been in 15 dead malls and never thought about it that way. Made me wonder if anyone else notices how different the silence is in each spot, or if I'm just overthinking it.

Twenty two year old night shift mall cop waxing poetic about silence says more about the guy than the mall. Food courts are always weird quiet after hours because there's nothing to buy and nobody selling anything. That's not deep, that's just the place being closed. Probably got bored and started assigning meaning to empty space. Reminds me of when people say a parking lot feels "lonely" at 3 AM. It's a parking lot. It's supposed to be empty.

People get SO weird about assigning deep meaning to completely normal empty spaces. It's the same thing when someone talks about a "haunted" feeling in an old building that's just got bad lighting and creaky floors. Empty doesn't always mean mystical, sometimes it just means the lights are off.
