Met an old security guard at the Forest Mall in Wisconsin last fall
He was sitting near the old food court fountain reading a paperback, I think it was a Tom Clancy novel. He told me he used to patrol here in the 90s when it was packed and said 'the echo changes when nobody's around.' Anyone else run into someone who actually worked there back in the day?

Did he mention how quiet the mall was even back then? That comment about the echo is pretty spot on for how empty these places feel now. I remember malls in the 90s being so loud you could barely hear yourself think. It's wild how much the atmosphere has changed.

Can't believe how loud those 90s malls actually were, it's like a whole different world now...

The old Sears wing at Forest Mall had a water feature that dripped in a specific rhythm, I remember that from when I went there as a kid in like 97. That guard probably knows every crack in those tiles by now. Logan is right about the noise difference, the 90s mall was basically a giant echo chamber of arcade beeps and food court chatter, now it's just footsteps. You can hear the HVAC system humming from the other end of the hall, it's creepy how quiet it got.
