The security guard at Valley View Mall who just wanted to talk
I was poking around the old food court at Valley View Mall in Roanoke, Virginia back in 2019, and this security guard about 60 years old walked up. Instead of yelling at me to leave, he pointed to the empty Sbarro and said "my daughter worked that register for three summers, she met her husband there." He ended up walking me through the whole lower level telling me stories about each store. Has anyone else had a guard or employee actually share memories instead of kicking you out?

That "my daughter worked that register" bit is sweet, I've had luck just asking old timers about the place.

Man that guard sounds like a real gem. It's wild how those slow boring shifts can turn into something special if the person actually cares about the place. I bet he had a million more stories if you'd had the time to hear them all.
