Warning: I used to think exploring the old Sunrise Mall in Corpus Christi was fine alone, but a close call changed my mind.
I was there last fall, poking around the old food court, when I stepped on a floor tile that just gave way. My leg went through up to my knee into a dark space below. I was alone, and it took me a good ten minutes to carefully pull myself out without making it worse. Now I won't go into any place like that without a buddy, period. Has anyone else had a similar scare that made them change their routine?

Yeah, that's the kind of thing that'll make you rethink everything. After my own scare in an old warehouse, I started carrying a small crowbar in my bag, not to break in, but just in case I needed to pry myself out of a jam. It sounds over the top, but so is waiting for help with your leg stuck in a hole.

Add a flashlight to that kit.

Carrying a crowbar sounds like a lot. I get the idea, but that's extra weight and it might cause more problems than it solves. A good flashlight can do most of the same jobs, like prying open a stuck door or signaling for help. Adding heavy tools just turns your bag into a toolbox you have to lug around every day.
