Warning: the old Sunrise Mall in Mesa has a serious pigeon problem now
I went in last fall to shoot some photos of the empty food court (you know, the one with the big broken fountain) and the noise from the birds in the ceiling was unreal, like a constant flapping and cooing that made my skin crawl. The floor was covered in about an inch of droppings in some spots, which really ruins the vibe of a place that's supposed to be about quiet decay. Has anyone else run into a biohazard level of birds at a spot they were trying to explore?

That place was a ghost town anyway, the pigeons just moved in first. Honestly, the droppings and noise add to the atmosphere, makes it feel more like a real ruin instead of a cleaned-up museum. I'd take a living biohazard over a sterile dead mall any day, it's more interesting to photograph.

Never saw it that way before. You're right, the mess makes it feel more alive somehow. Might go back with my camera now.

My aunt's old greenhouse is like that now, all broken glass and wild vines. It's way more beautiful than when she kept it neat. You should totally go back with your camera, vera_campbell, the light through the busted roof is amazing.
