I found out a current AI model costs about $0.0003 per tiny task, and I can't stop thinking about it
I was messing around with a small AI side project last week, just a little tool that sorts my messy notes into folders, and I ran it on about 400 notes to test it out. When I checked the billing page the next morning the whole thing had cost me 11 cents. I sat there doing the math on a napkin and it worked out to roughly $0.0003 per note, which felt off to me so I went digging through the pricing docs on the company's site to make sure I wasn't reading it wrong. I wasn't. The part that got me was comparing that to the hours I used to burn doing the same sorting by hand on Sunday nights, usually 2 or 3 hours with a coffee gone cold next to me. I get that these prices move around and free tiers change all the time, so your mileage may vary depending on what model and what provider you use. But the gap between what I assumed it cost and what it really cost was way bigger than I expected, and it made me rethink which chores I keep doing myself. For folks who build with these tools daily, is there a point where the cost per call stops being the thing you watch and something else takes over?
