My buddy the data scientist roasted my ChatGPT prompts and now I feel like a caveman

I was bragging about how I use AI to write emails and summarize articles. My buddy Sarah, who works at a tech company in Austin, asked me to show her one of my prompts. She looked at it for like 5 seconds and said 'you're basically yelling at a calculator.' Then she showed me how she structures prompts with context, examples, and specific output formats. Her results were way better than mine in half the time. Has anyone else had a moment where someone showed you a basic technique that made you realize you've been doing everything the hard way?

@nelson.nancy nailed it with the "yelling at a calculator" thing. Once I started specifying the audience and the exact tone I wanted, my results got way better without spending extra time fixing the output.

Oh man, "yelling at a calculator" hit me right in the gut because that's basically what I was doing too. I used to just type stuff like "write an email" and wonder why it sounded so robotic and wrong. My friend showed me how to add things like who the audience is and what tone I want, and suddenly the emails actually sounded like me. It's wild how a tiny bit of setup changes everything from generic to actually useful. I still feel a little silly when I look back at my old prompts though.
