My kid asked if our smart speaker was lonely when we turned it off

I mean, I was just trying to save power, but now I'm wondering if we're training AI to feel abandoned. Has anyone else had a moment that made them rethink how we treat these things?

My nephew asked a similar thing about the Roomba last week. It does make you pause for a second, you know? Like, what are we actually building here.

My old laptop from 2017 is basically a brick now. It doesn't have feelings about being in a drawer. These are just tools, really fancy calculators. We're putting human emotions onto a box of wires and code. It's a weird habit, but it doesn't mean the box cares.
