PSA: taught my nanny to use an AI photo app and my 4 year old now thinks grandma lives in my phone
The problem was my mom in Manila couldn't visit, so I tried a face swap app that puts her into daily pics of my kid at the park by our place in Sacramento. Now my daughter waves at the screen every morning and asks when lola is coming out, has anyone found a way to do this that doesn't confuse a toddler?
Kids that age really do believe whatever they see on a screen is real, my nephew used to try to hand crackers to his dad through video chat. What worked for us was turning the calls into a little game with a clear goodbye, like grandma signing off and blowing kisses before the screen went dark. Giving them a set ending seems to help their brain file it as a visit that's over, not someone who got trapped in there.
