Fan sub vs official release, the 2014 simulcast switch taught me a lesson

I remember when Crunchyroll started doing same-day subs back in 2014 for shows like Parasyte. I used to wait for fansubs from a group that took 3 days to drop each episode, but the quality was so much better. Then one week my usual group got hit with a DMCA and never finished the season, leaving me hanging at episode 15. Now I just watch whatever is legal first, even if the translation is a bit clunkier. Anyone else have a favorite fansub group that just vanished one day?

Wait, did anyone else's fansub group just straight up stop mid-season with zero notice and then delete their whole site? That happened to me with a Steins;Gate group back in 2011, I was so mad I almost just gave up on anime completely.
