Had to pick between subbed and dubbed for a 400 episode shonen series
I went subbed after the first 20 episodes because the dubbed voice for the main character made me cringe, but now I'm 200 episodes in and honestly missing being able to look at my phone during fights.

The subbed vs dubbed dilemma is basically a battle between your ears and your eyeballs at this point. You get to hear the original screaming but you lose the ability to scroll TikTok during the three-episode training arc. Pick your poison I guess.

That "pick your poison" thing applies to pretty much every choice these days, doesn't it.

Read this thing the other day from a voice actor who does both sub and dub work. She said the real difference is all in the mouth movements matching up with the words. Like in dubs they have to tweak the script so the lip flaps look natural, which can totally change what a character is actually saying. Subtitles just do a straight translation most of the time, so you get the real meaning but miss out on those tiny little pauses and breaths that make a scene feel alive. Kinda makes you wonder which version is closer to what the director originally wanted.
