One sharp critique in the sub's rewatch thread flipped my whole take on pacing

I was defending a 3-cour show's slow burn in a rewatch thread last month, saying the quiet episodes were building character. Then someone replied, 'You're confusing padding with depth, the manga cuts half of this and loses nothing.' That stung because they were right, I had screenshots showing three episodes that basically repeated the same conversation. After that I went back and timed every scene that didn't push the plot or add new info, ended up fast-forwarding through nearly 40 minutes total. Now when I recommend that series to people, I tell them to skip episodes 9 and 10 entirely and read a 2-page summary instead. But it got me thinking, how much of what we call 'atmosphere' is actually just filler we've trained ourselves to accept? Has anyone else had a specific criticism that made you rewatch something and realize you were giving it way too much credit?
