PSA: Asking the wrong question in r/animesuggest got me nowhere until I changed one thing

I kept asking for 'sad anime like Your Lie in April' and just got the same 5 recommendations over and over. Then last week I started asking for shows with a specific scene type - like a character breaking down in a rain scene or a quiet moment before a big fight. Suddenly people started throwing out stuff like Haibane Renmei and Texhnolyze that I never heard of. Anyone else find that changing how you ask for recs totally changes what you get back?

Honestly yeah, specificity is everything with recs.

Specificity can actually box you in and make you miss something way better. Half my favorite books and movies came from vague one sentence descriptions that had nothing to do with the actual plot. If someone told me exactly what I was getting into, I probably would have skipped it and that would have been a real shame.
