Sat through all of Sword Art Online because a coworker swore it got good at episode 14
Turns out 'it gets good' meant 'it stays exactly the same but with more crying.' What show did a friend promise would get better, and how many episodes did you give it before you quit?

My rule now is 3 episodes unless the friend gives me a real reason, like "the first arc is slow but the payoff at episode 8 is worth it." Handing someone a fixed number is lazy and usually means they just want you to suffer with them. Next time ask what specifically changes and when, then hold them to it.
