TIL watching anime with subs actually makes more sense for me now

I used to only watch dubs because I thought I'd miss the action reading subtitles. Then about 6 months ago I tried subbed Attack on Titan after a buddy said the Japanese voice acting is way more intense. I was wrong... the raw emotion just hits different when you hear the original actors. Now I never go back unless I'm half asleep. Has anyone else switched sides on this debate?

Switched to subs during a sleepless night and now I can't even stand dubs, they sound like bad ADR from a 90s kung fu movie.

Hold up a sec, I gotta push back a little on that. 90s kung fu ADR was actually pretty rough, but modern dubs have gotten way better than that comparison gives them credit for. I've watched some really solid dubs lately that actually match lip flaps pretty well and have good voice acting. Not saying subs are wrong or anything, but dubbing has come a long way since the days of cheesy overdubs.

2 years ago I was the biggest dub snob you'd meet @ben206, but now I'm the opposite. The funny thing is this whole debate reminds me of how people get set in their ways about everything else too. Like when my buddy finally tried homemade pasta after swearing boxed was just as good and now he won't touch the store stuff. There's something about the raw, unfiltered version of something that makes the polished version feel fake after you see the real deal. Even my crew says the same thing about using cheap paint versus the good stuff. Once you know what better looks and sounds like, it's hard to pretend you don't.
