Used to think subbed was always better than dubbed, until my buddy threw on Cyberpunk Edgerunners with the English track

I used to be THAT guy, you know the one who talks about 'original intent' and 'voice acting emotion'. But my friend just put on Cyberpunk Edgerunners with the English dub playing, and I didn't even notice for like 10 minutes. The lip flaps matched perfectly and the voice for David actually sounded natural. I spent like 3 hours arguing with him about it before I realized I was enjoying it just as much. Now I'm questioning if I missed out on a bunch of other good dubs. Has anyone else changed their stance on this?

Wait so with Cyberpunk Edgerunners specifically, did you try switching back to the sub after watching the dub for a while? I keep wondering if that initial "this is the original" bias just fades after you give the other track a real shot or if you start hearing things that bug you.

Actually had the same thing happen with me but with Cowboy Bebop back in the day. Always thought the Japanese cast was the only way to go until a friend put on the English version and I could not deny how good it was. The voices just fit the characters perfectly and the translations actually felt natural instead of stiff. It really opened my eyes to how some dubs these days put in real effort to match the lip flaps and capture the right emotions. Now I give every show a fair shot with both tracks before picking a side. Still prefer subs for most older anime but newer stuff has been surprising me lately.
