Watched 12 episodes subbed after 12 episodes dubbed and the difference hit me hard
I binged all of Attack on Titan season one dubbed first, then went back and watched the same 12 episodes subbed, and the gap in emotional delivery was not small. In the subbed version, Eren's breakdown in episode 6 in the forest actually made me tear up, while the dub left me flat and kind of bored. I am not saying subs are always better, since comedy dubs like Ghost Stories clearly win, but for heavy drama the original voice work just carries more weight for me. Has anyone else gone back and forth on a specific show and felt this, or am I just too picky about voice acting?
My buddy did almost the exact same thing with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, watched the dub all the way through first, then went back and tried the sub, and he said the scene where Hughes dies hit him WAY harder the second time around in Japanese. He's not even a sub purist, he watches dubs all the time, so it caught him off guard. His take was that the original actors just had more direction from the people who made the show, so the small stuff, the cracks in the voice during sad scenes, lands better. He still watches comedies dubbed though, says the jokes need to hit fast or the timing dies.
