Burner went out on a gas range last Wednesday, took me 3 hours to find the right igniter

I was fixing a 5 year old GE gas range last week out in Elmwood. The burner wouldn't spark at all, figured it was just a dirty electrode but nope. Took me forever to realize the igniter module was bad, not just the spark plug. Anyone else run into those newer GE modules that fail way too fast?

Heard from a buddy who fixes appliances that those GE modules have been getting shoddy the last few years, like they cheap out on the capacitors or something. My own range at home is old as dirt, still going strong with its original parts, so I've never had to deal with it myself. But he was saying the igniter module is basically a $50 part that should last a decade, not 5 years. Might be worth checking if yours is still under warranty, some of those GE ranges had extended coverage on the electronics.

Hell yeah, I've been through this exact crap with a GE range myself. That igniter module died at year 4, just outside the basic warranty and I was livid. Check your model number online for the extended coverage, GE had a quiet batch that got extra years on the control board and igniter for sure. I ended up replacing mine myself, took about 20 minutes with a screwdriver, and found the part for $35 on a parts site. Just make sure you unplug the range and discharge the capacitor before you touch anything, that stored voltage can bite you. Those Chinese capacitors they started using are absolute junk, swap them both out while you're in there if you're handy.
