Customer complaint about a loud fridge made me check condenser fans first

Last month a lady called me out to her house in Phoenix because her fridge was making a racket. I was ready to dive into the compressor or evap fan, but she mentioned it only happened after 3 pm when the sun hit that side of the house. Turned out the condenser fan blade was warped from heat exposure and just needed a $12 replacement. Now I always ask about timing and sun exposure before opening anything up. Has anyone else found simple questions like that save you a ton of time?

Man, that's a great tip about asking when the noise happens. I've had a few calls where the customer only mentioned the sound but not the timing, and I ended up chasing my tail for an hour. It makes me wonder how many other jobs we overcomplicate by missing one simple detail like that. Seems like half the battle is just asking the right questions before you even touch a tool.

Oh man, tell me about it. I've learned the hard way that "it makes a weird noise" is basically useless info. Now I always ask "does it happen when it's running or when it's shut down?" and "does it change when you step on the gas or turn the wheel?" Nine times out of ten that narrows it down to a specific suspension component or belt issue. Saves me from pulling half the car apart for nothing.
