Drum cleaning is a scam until you hit a greasy dryer at 9pm

After 14 years of just wiping lint and calling it good, I finally pulled the heater box off a Maytag at a duplex in Richmond and one dryer tuneup with a shop vac and degreaser saved the customer a $400 motor replacement, so who else here actually strips the drum instead of just reading the moisture sensors?

Pulling the heater box is the move but the drum itself usually isn't where the grease hides. It's the blower wheel and the felt seals that get caked and choke the airflow. Once that airflow drops the motor runs hot and that's what kills it, not the drum being dirty.

Heat cycling is what really does it, every time that thing goes hot then cold the leftover grease bakes into varnish on the blower and seals, so a once a year vac job never touches the real buildup @oliver_wilson49. The Richmond dryer probably ran hot for years before anyone noticed, and the motor was just the last thing to give out.
