Got into it with a buddy over whether to replace or rebuild a 15-year-old Maytag washer motor last Tuesday

He says always swap the whole unit for speed, but I rebuilt the motor in my garage in about two hours for under $40, so what's your go-to call on old but fixable parts?

Think about the landfill, man.

That Tuesday argument sounds like it got pretty heated for a chat about a washing machine. Is a two hour repair job really such a big deal in the grand scheme of things? Some folks just don't have the time or want to get their hands dirty, and that's fine. But if you can fix it cheap, why throw out a whole machine that still works?

My neighbor's machine needed a new pump. Cost him forty bucks and an hour on YouTube.
