Question about part choices after a repair in a lakeside cabin

I drove out to a secluded cabin to work on a broken dishwasher last month. Lots of folks say only factory parts last, but I tried a universal pump and it's been fine for weeks. Do you ever use off-brand components when you're far from your usual suppliers?

Ever notice how people make simple fixes sound like rocket science? Your pump story feels like when my car door latch broke and a ten dollar part from the hardware store did the trick for years.

My grandfather always kept a jar of assorted springs and latches in his workshop. He fixed most things around the farm with just those bits and some common sense. I see @the_ray's point about factory parts for important things, though. The real trick is knowing when a ten dollar part is enough and when you're just putting a band-aid on a bigger issue. That latch might hold for years, but on a daily driver, I'd want to be sure it won't fail at a bad time.

Factory parts are worth the wait, though.
