I finally quit buying the $18 shop rags for my bay and I feel silly
For a long time I thought the fancy blue roll of shop towels was worth the money because they soak up oil so fast. Last month I ran out on a Saturday and grabbed a bundle of plain white terry cloth rags from the hardware store for $9.99. I started using those instead and honestly they work just as well for wiping down dipsticks and checking fluid color. The blue ones cost me around $216 a year at the rate I go through them. I switched to a 25 pack of terry cloths that I wash with my work clothes every Friday. The washing adds maybe 10 minutes to my week but I am saving close to $200 annually. Has anyone else here dropped the fancy disposables for reusable rags, and did you find a certain fabric that holds up best against brake cleaner?
Wait, you're telling me the blue towels run you 216 bucks a year? That's wild. I get the convenience thing but that's a car payment for some people.
I've been using old cut up bath towels for years. They're a little linty at first but after a few washes they're fine. Brake cleaner will eat through anything eventually though, so I just use the cheap ones for that and save the good rags for fluids.
