I swore the parts cannon was the answer, then a $12 test light saved me from a $400 alternator
For years I'd just swap parts when a car came in with a charging issue, starter here, alternator there, because it was fast and the customer paid for it. Last Tuesday a guy brought in a 2011 Civic with a no-crank and I was already writing up an alternator when my boss handed me his old test light and told me to check the cables first. Turned out the ground strap had a green crusty spot right where it bolted to the block, and a $12 wire brush and five minutes fixed what I was about to charge $400 for. I felt like a hack, honestly. Now I want to know, how many of you got taught to load the cannon first and actually changed your ways?
