Overheard a customer call their alternator a 'generator' at the shop today

I was doing a belt inspection on a 2017 F-150 and the owner was telling his friend the 'generator' was making noise. It made me realize how often regular folks mix up basic parts. I explained the alternator charges the battery while the engine runs, but a generator is a whole different piece of equipment. How do you guys handle explaining parts to customers without sounding like you're talking down to them?

A 2017 F-150 and he called it a generator? That's a new one. I usually just say it's the thing that makes the battery power.

That 2017 F-150 story is wild. @logan205 has the right idea keeping it simple. Do you ever show them the actual part while you explain it?
