Pro tip: never let a customer talk you into skipping the compression test on an older subaru

guy rolls in with a 2005 outback last friday, says it just needs a tune up, i ask if he wants me to check compression first and he laughs and says nah it's fine just the plugs, then i pull the plug on cylinder 3 and it's got oil all over it and a cracked ringland, now he's mad at me for finding the real problem.

My buddy Kyle bought a used truck last year and skipped the compression test because he was in a hurry. Three weeks later the engine started knocking real bad on the highway. He ended up spending almost four grand on a rebuild and learned his lesson the hard way. @faithwalker you are exactly right about this being the kind of shortcut that comes back to bite you every time. Now I won't even look at a used vehicle without running that test first.
