Remember when you could actually see the engine without pulling half the car apart?

Working on a 92 F150 yesterday, popped the hood and could actually reach the distributor without moving anything. Made me think about how my daily driver now requires taking off the plastic engine cover, the intake tube, and sometimes even the wiper cowl just to change spark plugs. What year did things start getting so cramped under there? Anybody else miss the simplicity of 90s engine bays?

dude i feel that so hard. i read that and just went "...wait, for real?" i've done spark plugs on a handful of cars over the years and never once had to touch the wiper cowl. seems like overkill unless you're working on some weird luxury car with zero space under the hood. my guess is the person who posted that either got bad advice or is working on something really specific. take it with a grain of salt for sure, that's not standard for most vehicles.
