Shoutout to the old timer in Toledo who taught me to check the air filter before touching the MAF sensor
Back in 2014 I spent a solid two hours chasing a rough idle on a customer's sedan, and I mean I was deep in it, cleaning the mass air flow sensor, checking vacuum lines, the whole deal. An older tech named Ray watched me the whole time and finally asked if I'd pulled the filter. It was packed solid with junk and that was the entire problem. These days I see newer guys load up a parts cannon at the first check engine light, swapping sensors left and right when half the time it's just a clogged filter, a loose gas cap, or a dirty throttle body. I'm not saying scan tools are bad, I use mine constantly, but I came up reading plugs and listening to an engine. I've watched three guys in my bay fry two MAP sensors and a coil pack between them because nobody looked at the basics first. So what is it for you, do you still start with the cheap stuff or go straight to the live data?
