Unpopular opinion: torque sticks are for lazy techs
I worked with a guy in Phoenix who swore by them, but after 3 lug nuts snapped on a F-150 I went back to a calibrated beam wrench and never had a comeback. Anyone else ditch the impact accessory for the old way?
Those things are only as good as the guy who last checked them, and half the shops I've been in never get them tested. Seen the same mess you did, guy zips a nut on with a stick rated for 100 ft lbs and it still overtorques because the stick is worn out or the gun is cranked too high. T-handle or a good beam wrench takes an extra minute but you won't be drilling out snapped studs on some dude's truck. If you're gonna use them, at least finish with a real wrench and never trust them for anything but the first snug pass.
